When is the best time to organize all your belongings? While there is never a bad time to do so, there are times when it'll be much easier to do so. Moving into a new house or apartment is one of the best opportunities you'll find for taking inventory of your "stuff" and organizing it properly. How to go about doing this? There are a variety of techniques and approaches; this article will take a look at some of the most practical organization methods that also won't take up too much of your time.
You'll want to get rid of everything you don't need or use. This is likely the most daunting task but try to approach it with an air of adventure; make it game, how much stuff do I really need? How much stuff can I get rid of? A good rule of thumb is to divide items into two piles. The first pile is items you've used or needed in the last year. The second pile is items you've not touched or needed for a year or more. The practical among us can surely see where this is going! Once you've identified items you haven't used in a year, ask yourself if you really need them? 95% of the time, the answer is going to be no. This applies especially for clothes, but also toys, movies, and books. You can take items such as CD's, movies, and books to locally owned shops (book stores, game shops, record stores, and so on) and exchange them for cash or store credit. You can also donate items to a local charity or thrift shop with the added perk of writing the value off from your taxable income. Another easy way to get rid of things is to hold a garage sale and price items at a bargain rate.
Shoe Rack Stand
Install a closet organizer in your master bedroom. Closet organizers can do a lot to take the mess out of a closet. Whether you install something that installs into the walls or is a stand-alone unit, you'll discover space in the closet you never knew existed. Items such as shoes should also be off the floor and placed into a shoe rack. Many closet organizers come with shoe racks built into them. If not, consider an over-the-door shoe rack which places the shoes at an accessible height on the inside of your closet door.
Make a binder for all your bills, insurance, and homeowner items. Moving into a new home means new bills. It usually also means more bills, especially if you've purchased new electronics and kitchen gear, warranties to go with them, and/or any sort of homeowner warranty for your home. Keeping track of this information is a daunting task but not if you start off right by getting a binder and some tabs. The first time you have a homeowner issue and need to verify something or a call the manufacturer, you'll be very happy you made this binder.
